Early filers set new Self Assessment tax record

Industry News - 28th May 2025

Almost 300,000 people filed their Self Assessment tax returns in the first week of the new tax year, setting a new record, according to HMRC.

In the first seven days following the start of the new tax year (from 6-12 April), 299,419 returns were filed with HMRC, with thousands of early filers actually submitting their returns on the very first day (6 April).

With around 8 months to go until the January 2026 deadline, the benefits of filing your tax return early include:

•  Knowing what tax you owe sooner
•  Planning your payments in advance and avoiding the stress of leaving it until the last minute
•  Receiving your tax refund sooner, if you are due one
•  Setting up a payment plan to help you budget with regular payments towards your bill.

HMRC has updated its guidance on filing tax returns early and offers information on help to pay.
