A tax transformation is underway at HMRC with a range of plans to improve the UK’s tax system by 2030.
HMRC recently unveiled its Transformation Roadmap, a series of digital improvements and measures to support taxpayers and simplify processes.
One area of focus for improvement is Self Assessment (SA), with the introduction during this current tax year, of new services to simplify the process of filing and managing tax returns.
The new features for SA include:
- Improvements to the digital Self Assessment registration and opt out processes
- Introducing enhanced on-screen messages to reassure taxpayers and reduce the need for them to chase progress on enquiries
- Improving the late filing and late payment penalties online appeals process.
With over 12 million people expected to file a tax return this year, HMRC is encouraging taxpayers to file their returns early. This allows you time to budget ahead of the 31 January 2026 deadline and set up a payment plan if appropriate. You will also know how much tax you have to pay and if you are due a refund, you can receive it sooner.
The Transformation Roadmap includes over 50 IT projects and measures to be delivered by 2030, with the aim of modernising HMRC and simplifying the tax system for taxpayers.
