Following HMRC’s recent unveiling of its plans for the future of the UK’s tax system, another of the projects announced as part of its Transformation Roadmap will see the introduction of a new online Pay As You Earn (PAYE) service for UK workers.
According to HMRC, around 35 million workers will gain easier access to their tax affairs through the new online system, which will be available via their Personal Tax Account or the HMRC app. PAYE taxpayers will be able to check and update their income, tax codes, allowances, reliefs and work-related expenses, to offer them greater visibility and control of their tax.
This service is one of over 50 projects planned as part of HMRC’s Transformation Roadmap, which aims to make HMRC a ‘digital first’ organisation by 2030, with 90% of customer interactions taking place digitally. This will be achieved through the use of IT and AI technologies; automating tax services; reducing paper correspondence and offering new digital self-service options across a number of tax systems.
In our last article we looked at the changes being planned for Self Assessment taxpayers, aimed at simplifying the process of filing and managing tax returns, as part of the modernisation plans, with further projects on the way.
