New scam warning for Self Assessment customers

Industry News - 24th September 2025

HMRC has issued a fresh warning to watch out for as the self assessment January deadline approaches. Be aware of new scam attempts as fraudsters are impersonating HMRC and targeting people with fake tax refund offers, urgent payment demands, and phishing messages.

It’s worth noting that between August 2024 and July this year, HMRC received more than 170,000 scam reports — with over 47,000 linked to bogus tax refund claims.

Kelly Paterson, HMRC’s Chief Security Officer, said:

“Scammers target individuals when they know Self Assessment customers will be preparing to file their tax returns. We’re urging everyone to stay alert to scam emails and texts offering fake tax refunds.”

Important Points to Remember

  • HMRC say they will never:
    • Ask for personal or financial details via text/email
    • Leave threatening voicemails
    • Contact you to tell you about a refund by text, email, or phone
  • Please check advice on GOV.UK to help you identify scam activity
  • Only use your HMRC online account or the HMRC app to claim a refund safely
  • Protect yourself – Never share passwords, access codes, or personal details
  • Recognise – Don’t click links or respond to suspicious emails, calls, or texts
  • Report
    • Forward emails: phishing@hmrc.gov.uk
    • Forward texts: 60599
    • Report scam calls: via GOV.UK
    • Contact your bank immediately if money is stolen and report to Action Fraud.

We are here to help you and filing your tax return early will help to limit the risk of scams.

If you receive a message claiming to be from HMRC and you’re unsure, please contact us first before taking any action.
