Then…

We set up Perrigo Consultants Limited on Valentine’s Day 15 years ago, having taken the leap of quitting our jobs working with blue-chip companies. Our goal was simple: to build a company that helped professional business owners grow, truly understand their numbers, and make better decisions. 

Back in 2011, Perrigo Consultants was just the two of us, sat around the kitchen table with a single client – a client we’re proud to still act for today. At the time, we couldn’t have imagined how far the business would grow.

And Now…

Today, we support over 1,000 clients and have an incredible team of more than 25 people, all focused on helping our clients grow their businesses, gain clarity from their numbers, and operate in a tax-efficient way. Our recent office move has given us a fantastic space for both our team and clients, and we were delighted to be named a finalist for Most Impressive Growth at the Autumn Entrepreneurs’ Circle Annual Awards in Birmingham. 

Over the last 15 years, the tax and reporting landscape has changed beyond recognition. The introduction of AI, cloud accounting software such as Xero, Companies House ID requirements, and Making Tax Digital – to name just a few – means that standing still is no longer an option. Our role has evolved from simply reporting on the past to helping clients navigate constant change with confidence into the future. 

What hasn’t changed is our commitment to professionalism, clarity and doing the right thing for our clients. Change is inevitable, but our focus remains the same: adapting, improving and supporting our clients every step of the way.

15 Things We’ve Learned…
in 15 years of Advising Clients

1. Don’t let the tax tail wag the business dog
   Good tax planning supports good decisions – it shouldn’t drive bad ones.
   
2. Know your real profit, not just your bank balance
   Cash in the bank isn’t profit. Timing, tax, and liabilities matter.
   
3. Review your numbers monthly, not yearly
   Waiting until year-end is like checking the score after the match is over.
   
4. Put money aside for tax as you earn it
   Treat tax like a non-negotiable cost, not a nasty surprise.
   
5. If revenue is growing but cash is tight, act early
   This is common – and fixable – if spotted soon enough.
   
6. Claim what you’re entitled to (but not what you’re not)
   Over-claiming causes stress. Under-claiming costs real money.
   
7. Don’t outgrow your structure by accident
   What worked at £100k turnover may be inefficient at £500k.
   
8. Separate business and personal finances properly
   It saves time, tax headaches, and awkward conversations later.
   
9. Understand your break-even point
   Knowing your “bare minimum” gives clarity and confidence.
   
10. Price for profit, not just competitiveness
    Being busy isn’t the same as being profitable.
    
11. Keep records simple – but consistent
    Perfect systems matter less than ones you actually use.
    
12. Plan dividends and drawings, don’t guess them
    Random withdrawals often create tax problems down the line.
    
13. If something feels unclear, it probably is
    Confusion is a signal – ask before it becomes expensive.
    
14. Think ahead before big purchases
    Timing can make a real difference to cash flow and tax.
    
15. Your accountant should help you sleep better
    If your numbers cause stress, that’s a conversation worth having.
