If you use your own car, van, motorcycle, or bicycle for business travel, you may be entitled to tax relief on your mileage.
Many employees spend their own money on work-related costs — and if your employer doesn’t fully reimburse you, HMRC may let you claim back the difference.
You can usually claim tax relief for business travel, such as:
- Visiting a temporary workplace
- Travelling between different work sites.
Please note however, that travel between home and your normal place of work doesn’t qualify.
Mileage rates
If your employer pays you less than these approved rates, you can claim Mileage Allowance Relief for the difference:
| Vehicle Type | Rate per Mile (first 10,000 miles) | Rate per Mile (after 10,000 miles) |
| Car or Van | 45p | 25p |
| Motorcycle | 24p | 24p |
| Bicycle | 20p | 20p |
You can also claim an extra 5p per mile for each colleague you carry on business journeys (in a car or van).
You can claim through your HMRC Personal Tax Account or via a Self Assessment tax return if you file one.
Even small claims add up over time — so it’s worth checking!
